The Waaihoek precinct was a founding venue for the African National Congress at the Wesleyan in 1912.

Waaikoek in Bloemfontein was declared a National Heritage site in 2011 and has been developed to attract more tourists.

The Free State Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation states that the process to nominate the Waaihoek site started in 2019 following the deliberations between the department, Mangaung Metro municipality and the United Nations, Scientific and Cultural Organisation.
