While discussing foreign aid, the President referred to Lesotho as “a country nobody has ever heard of,” a comment that has since drawn strong reactions.
Thabo Sekonyela, the Spokesperson for Lesotho's government, said that the remarks were not only dismissive but also failed to acknowledge the country’s history and sovereignty. “We were startled and amazed at these sentiments,” Sekonyela stated, pointing out that the government would seek a formal apology from the President.
“We have already reached out to their office here in Maseru, and there will be an engagement through diplomatic channels. Our ambassador to the US will take this matter up once we have held discussions with their embassy here in Maseru,” Sekonyela added.
The remarks from the US President have sparked a wave of criticism, with many accusing him of ignorance regarding Lesotho’s standing on the global stage. Observers have called for a more informed approach from global powers when discussing smaller nations, especially those with longstanding histories and cultural significance.
