The SIU's inquiry, which was detailed to the Standing Committee on Public Accounts, reveals extensive misconduct by legal representatives handling road accident claims.
Leonard Lekgetho, the SIU's Lead Investigator, reported that an estimated $170 million is under scrutiny, with cases involving private attorneys and even the Sheriff of the court.
Lekgetho highlighted the gravity of the situation, stating, "The SIU is currently investigating 102 law firms, including the Sheriff who received a substantial amount of three hundred and four billion. The RAF, in collaboration with the SIU, has managed to reclaim a portion of the lost funds. To date, agreements of debt have been signed to the value of $4.1 million, with actual cash recoveries amounting to $2.37 million. The remaining balance continues to accrue interest, increasing the financial stakes as the investigation progresses."
